There Is Life After Bankruptcy

Despite what your creditors may tell you, filing for bankruptcy is not a disastrous event. You can rebuild your credit and you can live a perfectly happy, comfortable, normal life. If you are struggling with a debt burden that you can't overcome, bankruptcy is the first step you can take to financial freedom.

I'm attorney Ben Sissman, and I have helped clients file for bankruptcy, discharge their debts and put their financial lives back in order for more than 30 years. I educate my clients and help them chart a sound course for future financial stability. Call 901-730-4958 or contact me online for a free initial consultation.

A Few Things to Expect After Filing for Bankruptcy:

  • Your creditors will stop harassing you. When you file for bankruptcy, the judge will immediately issue an order called an "automatic stay." This puts a halt to all of your creditors' efforts at collection, including foreclosure as well as garnishment and repossession. If they have a message, they will have to call my office.
  • You will have a chance to strengthen your financial foundation. When all of your debts are cleared away, you have the chance to start over again and rebuild your financial life on a firmer foundation.
  • You will learn to live on a budget. Some bankruptcies occur because individuals don't know enough about finance and budgeting. I will help you learn to live on a budget so that you can control your spending, make your payments and avoid problems in the future.
  • You will still be able to get credit. It will be harder to come by for a few years. If you want credit for a major purchase like a house or a car, you will likely have to make a higher down payment and pay a higher interest rate.

Putting Bankruptcy in Perspective

Many bankruptcies are caused because individuals just don't understand how money works. More than just filing Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 bankruptcy to discharge debt, I help my clients put bankruptcy, personal finance and lifestyle considerations into perspective. When you understand how many options and tools are at your disposal, you will be well-equipped to create a more stable, prosperous future.
